Big Creek Lake is one of the most popular recreation lakes in central Iowa – an 866-acre lake just north of Des Moines, the centerpiece of Big Creek State Park. With a long sandy beach, excellent fishing, a marina and direct connections to the region’s best bike trails, it’s a summer favorite for the Des Moines metro and a great companion to neighboring Saylorville Lake.

Big Creek is a strong, well-managed fishery: walleye and muskie are featured species (the lake is regularly stocked), along with good largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie and channel catfish. An Iowa fishing license is required. The clear, fairly deep water fishes well from boats and shore, and the lake’s accessibility makes it a favorite for after-work outings and family fishing.

The beach, state park and trails

Big Creek State Park boasts one of the finest swimming beaches in central Iowa, plus a marina with boat rentals, picnic areas and an aquatic playground. It’s a premier hub for cycling: the paved Neal Smith Trail links Big Creek to Saylorville and Des Moines, and the famous High Trestle Trail – with its landmark illuminated bridge – is nearby. Boating, sailing, paddling and swimming all thrive here, just minutes from the metro.

Getting there and what’s nearby

Big Creek Lake is just north of Polk City and about 20 minutes north of Des Moines, sitting immediately above Saylorville Lake. The High Trestle Trail and the Des Moines metro are close by.
