Best lakes near Omaha & Council Bluffs

Lake Manawa (in Council Bluffs). A 660-acre lake at Lake Manawa State Park right in Council Bluffs – the metro’s go-to spot for boating, fishing, a swimming beach and trails, just minutes from Omaha.
DeSoto Lake (~30 min N). A scenic Missouri River oxbow at DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge, great for fishing and wildlife watching (note refuge seasons and rules).
Prairie Rose Lake (~50 min E). A state-park lake with a beach, campground and good bass and bluegill fishing in the rolling hills east of the metro.
Viking Lake (~1 hr SE). Viking Lake State Park offers a beach, campground and quality bass and panfish fishing near Stanton.

What to do on the lakes near Omaha

For an in-town outing, Lake Manawa is right in Council Bluffs with a beach, boat ramps and trails minutes from Omaha. For a beach-and-camping weekend, head east to Prairie Rose, Viking or Lake Anita state parks, or north to DeSoto for fishing and wildlife at the refuge. An Iowa fishing license is required for the Iowa lakes (and a Nebraska license applies on the Nebraska side of the river).
