A prairie marsh lake
Goose Lake is one of eastern Iowa’s larger natural wetlands — a shallow, marshy lake ringed by cattails, timber and restored upland inside the Goose Lake Wildlife Area. It’s a remnant of the prairie-pothole marshes that once covered the region, and today it’s managed primarily as wildlife habitat, drawing migrating ducks and geese, shorebirds and a rich mix of marsh wildlife.
Fishing and wildlife
As a shallow marsh, Goose Lake is more about wildlife than trophy fishing, but its waters do hold panfish, bullhead and other rough fish, and it’s a favorite for waterfowl hunting in season. Birders and paddlers come for the wetland setting and the chance to see herons, egrets and clouds of waterfowl. Public access is through the state wildlife area; an Iowa fishing or hunting license applies as appropriate.
